Watch the salt!

One of the biggest contributors to hypertension is a high salt diet.

The recommended daily intake of salt: is 1 teaspoon a day. (Salt added to processed food included).

1 teaspoon of salt = 5 grams of salt = 2 grams of sodium (2000mg)

40 grams biltong = 962mg sodium – almost half of your daily portion!

How to reduce your salt intake:

* Don’t leave it on the table – put the salt shaker back into the cupboard.

Out of sight, out of mind!

* Use natural herbs and spices to add flavour.

* Including flavourful vegetables such as onion, celery and garlic in your cooking will also reduce the need for adding more salt to your food.

* Sprinkle lemon juice or vinegar on your salads, fish or chicken instead of adding more salt.

* Replace salt with a reduced-sodium salt.
